Activities
Senior assemblies this week covered the occupation of the Channel Islands during the Second World War, based on the award winning book 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society', urging the girls to read over half-term, and the expedition of Captain Scott to the Antarctic one hundred years ago this month. This has been followed most recently by Helen Skelton's expedition to the South Pole on a snow bicycle for Sport Relief and she reached her destination at about the time on Monday when the girls were hearing about Captain Scott. Some seniors have put together a display in the Library on both adventurers. Whole school assembly was about Chinese New Year, and we were joined by a large dragon with fluttering eyelashes! Our hymn was accompanied by our talented Vth Form musicians.
Thursday saw a 'Back to the eighties Day' complete with bright colours, large hair, legwarmers and vivid lipstick! The girls enjoyed an energetic 'Fame' style aerobics class at lunchtime.
On Friday, the Third Form and their parents learnt more about the GCSE options process at their Parents' Evening. This is an important time for girls and their parents and we continue to offer every support to ensure that the choices made by the girls will stand them in the best possible stead in the future. Girls in the Third Form start their GCSEs after Easter.
Public examinations have been occupying the time of many senior girls and we will all be pleased to see them end next week. The next public examinations will commence in May.
Next week sees a Chamber Concert after school on Wednesday, Unicorns cake sale on Thursday, a lower senior school activity afternoon, Maths Challenge examinations, and the Ist and IInd Form Parents' Evening after school on Friday.
Change to October Half Term Dates
The October half term will change from Wednesday 17th October 4.00 pm - Sunday 28th October to Wednesday 24th October 4.00 pm to Sunday 4th November.
ICT
Not to be left out of the fun, Form IV ICT went on a mini-geocache hunt of their own this week. They used an iPhone with the geocaching app and also a basic hand-held gps. Without giving any clues away the geocache called "Rainbow's End" is close to the school and has been set up by the ICT department. The girls enjoyed reading other geocacher's comments and taking home a cache (this time a toy soldier).

January has been a significant month for our Year 6 pupils. Three senior members of staff came to talk at our first Friday assembly back after the break and explained a little as to what life in the senior school would be like. The girls then had their Assessment Day last Friday which, although tiring, was their first taste of life in the senior school. The girls welcomed some new additions to their year group and I was very proud of their friendliness and good manners.
On Friday 13th January we had our second target assembly of the year and I was pleased to award 27 green target badges. Well done to all the girls for their hard work in completing these little challenges.
The Year 2 girls spent a rather damp day at the Weald and Downland Museum as part of their Great Fire of London topic. The girls were full of enthusiasm when they returned and are still recalling the facts that they learnt. Actually seeing a similar fire place to that in Pudding Lane in 1666 has helped to consolidate their learning and bring the topic to life.
We have now completed all our sessions at the Artworks Studio. The girls have thoroughly enjoyed the time spent there and I would like to thank Nancy Goodens for her time and sharing her expertise. The batik created by the older pupils is now hanging in Willow 3.
