Guide Dogs Visit Lavant House
Guide Dogs Visit Lavant House
Year 2 girls at Lavant House could have been forgiven for thinking that a person registered as blind would struggle with everyday tasks and rarely venture out! This is not the case as Paul Voller, registered blind for a number of years, explained to the young pupils with the help of Wilton the guide dog.
It was difficult for the girls to imagine the loss of the sense that they rely on most but were enchanted to hear Paul's management techniques. He told them of the vibrating button that he presses at a road crossing, which tells him when it is safe to cross. Paul also discussed his many hobbies including swimming, gardening and playing cards! In answer to the girls' questions they also learnt of talking books, microwaves and clocks making life easier and the role of brail in allowing Paul to read and understand writing. The girls were surprised to hear that Paul is even able to go on holiday!
Of course the girls were most in awe of nine-year-old guide dog Wilton (sponsored by Wilton Carpets) who has such a huge impact on Paul's life, giving him the independence to get around safely and freely in many situations.
The girls gained a huge amount of knowledge from Paul's discussion giving them an insight into a world totally different to their own.
