Junior visit to Intech

Junior visit to Intech Museum

Junior Lavant House girls enjoy a day of spectacular science at the Intech Museum in Winchester.  The wide selection of activities and challenges allowed children to explore and test scientific ideas and understand aspects of modern technology all within the confines of an impressive dome-shaped building.  Among the activities was the opportunity to build and test a simple structure to withstand the force of an earthquake motion!  The younger children were particularly drawn to the forces cylinder where large blasts of air forced parachutes upwards so children could observe the effects of gravity and air resistance.  A high floating ball also attracted a great deal of attention!

During a taught session the girls show off their logical ideas and excellent teamwork skills whilst designing bridges to withstand the force of one kilo in weight and to span 50cm in length.  In true Lavant House style the girls set out to exceed expectations and many bridges withstood 6 kilos in weight! Pictured are Cara Laffoley-Lane and Lily Houweling watching nervously as a bridge is put under huge pressure!  A fun and knowledgeable day was had by all.
