Junior pupils visit Toy Museum
Year 2 girls visit the Chichester Toy Museum on Thursday 22 September
Year 2 girls from Lavant House Junior school slip back in time with a visit to the Chichester Toy Museum, West Sussex. The girls were intrigued by the discovery of an old Victorian theatre found amongst the old items whilst the museum begins to pack away for a new re-opening in May.
The girls were given the opportunity to explore six old-fashioned toys that would have wowed children of their age. Included was a 1760s iron pig, which was one of the first toys to be made of metal and also move. Photographed are Annabel Thompson and Abigail Robinson holding the extremely heavy 260 year old toy! The four girls also tried their hand at viewing pictures through what was a very expensive stereoscope; the predecessor to 3D goggles and later, movies with a handle.
A favourite at the museum was an 1880s metal donkey and stable. The old-fashioned money box delighted the girls as its hind legs flicked coins into a box!
The visit allowed the young girls to realise just how far toy technology has come in just a few hundred years but also what fun the simplest toys can be!
