Lavant House School - Independent school for girls

Junior Mountbatten Athletics June

On a very cold and wet Wednesday 15th June, 19 Lavant House girls travelled to the Mountbatten Centre to compete in the West Sussex West Annual Athletics Tournament.

Year 7 team:

This was the Year 7 girls first experience of Mountbatten and they were all very nervous.  However, as soon as the events started they all become very focused and determined to do well.  Poppy Wildsmith and Robyn Wilson-Smith ran an excellent 200m heat to qualify for the final where they then came 6th and 8th.  The relay team consisting of Lucy Massie, Ellie Scutt, Amy Deller and Poppy Wildsmith performed well in their heat.  They then ran well in the final and achieved 5th.  The girls performed well in the long distance events with Lucy Massie achieving 4th in the 800m and Zoe Barnett came 4th in the 1500m.  These are some excellent results on the track, but our great results did not end there.  Whilst the track events were continuing many girls were competing in a variety of field events.  Zoe Barnett performed an excellent jump to achieve 5th in the long jump and Amy Deller and Poppy Wildsmith were jumping well to achieve 3rd (Poppy) and 5th (Amy) in the high jump.  The girls only learnt how to throw the javelin, discus and shot putt at the beginning of this term and I was extremely impressed with how quick they picked it up.  In the discus, Poppy Wildsmith threw an incredible 18m to achieve 1st and Amy Deller came 4th.  Beth Moret achieved an excellent 5th in the shot putt and in the javelin, we gained valuable points with Amy Deller achieving 6th and Robyn Wilson-Smith coming 7th.

The top 8 girls in each event score points for their team and with these incredible performances, Lavant House finished 3rd overall out of 11 schools.  An excellent result girls, well done.  The Year 7 team consisted of Poppy Wildsmith, Amy Deller, Lucy Massie, Zoe Barnett, Beth Moret, Ellie Scutt, Robyn Wilson-Smith, Hope Edwards and Victoria Voller.

Year 8 team:

Most of the year 8 team went to Mountbatten last year and knew what to expect, they achieved a lot last year and they had a lot to live up to, to ensure they repeated the previous year's success and the girls did not disappoint.  Lavant House's performance in the field events was excellent, with a Lavant House girl achieving a place in the top 8 for 5 of the 6 field events.  Rhiannon Phelps achieved an excellent 1st place in the shot putt and 3rd in the javelin.  Charlotte Oliver achieved 8th in the javelin and 6th in the discus.  Georgina Cranfield kept up the success achieving 5th in the discus.  Jess Breach and Bronte Harvey were jumping well in the high jump and they achieved 6th (Bronte) and 2nd (Jess) overall.  Some excellent results, well done girls.  Onto the track events now and here Lavant House showed determination and drive to achieve their best.  The relay team comfortably qualified for the relay final and they achieved 3rd, the team consisted of Alicia Woodage, Summer Moret, Bronte Popplewell and Jessica Breach.  Summer Moret injured herself in the heat of the relay and Abigail Sharp stepped in and ran a brilliant second leg in the final.  In both the 100m and 200m both of the Lavant House girls qualified in their heats to be in the finals.  The 100m was a close race but Jessica Breach came 1st achieving a new record of 12.80seconds and Alicia Woodage came 7th.  In the 200m final, Abigail Sharp came 7th and Jessica Breach came 1st achieving a second new record with 27.27seconds.

Many girls achieved valuable points for the school and Lavant House came 3rd overall out of 10 schools.  The Year 8 team consisted of: Jessica Breach, Summer Moret, Alicia Woodage, Abigail Sharp, Hannah Margetson, Bronte Harvey, Bronte Popplewell, Rhiannon Phelps, Georgina Cranfield and Charlotte Oliver.

Each year there is an award for the Most Outstanding Performance by an individual.  I am very proud to say that Jessica Breach won this award for beating the 100m and 200m records, achieving 2nd in the high jump and for being a member of the 3rd place relay team.  Jessica trains hard and she deserves this prestigious award.
