Lavant House School - Independent school for girls

Barfoots Visit

Year 8 girls from Lavant House went on an outing to Barfoots of Botley, at Sefter Farm, where they saw the farm's sweetcorn packing facility and the recently commissioned anaerobic digester.

Year 8 are participating in an event with many other schools over Great Britain. It is called the BBC School Report and involves the girls preparing a report on a subject of interest or importance. It teaches the girls how to use cameras and video recorders properly. They also have to be able to edit the film and construct the subject matter.

Year 8 decided that they would work on the sweetcorns' journey from the field via packaging processes to the super markets. On the outing they also learnt how on this particular farm they take the waste and turn it into energy in the anaerobic digester. This means not a piece of the sweetcorn goes to waste and electricity is produced and fertiliser for the fields.

Year 8 found the trip interesting, thought provoking and are currently preparing their entry for the BBC competition. We await the results with keen anticipation!
