Lavant House School - Independent school for girls

Pancake Day Race

Girls at Lavant House came to school brandishing their best frying pans for Shrove Tuesday last week. However, the pans were not in preparation for making traditional pancakes but for participating in a traditional celebration. Since 1445, people all over the UK have held pancake races in honour of the old tale that a woman, too busy baking, did not hear the church bells. The poor woman ended up dashing to the church, pan in hand complete with pancake! Contestants have historically been women and so pupils at Lavant House felt it only right hey honoured the custom associated with this time of year.

The girls were kindly provided with pancakes by the boarding house. They then raced in house teams, running the length of the school field and tossing their cakes as they went. Girls from the Senior school right down to the foundation took part in the event. Much merriment was had by all and the girls were well rewarded with the opportunity to taste the pancakes that had been freshly prepared in the kitchen. It was decided that this is certainly a custom worth upholding!
