'Adopt a Chef', February 2011
Girls at Junior Lavant House never shy away from the opportunity to develop new skills or learn more. Ordinarily, they are busily learning multiplications, how to use punctuation correctly, the complex details of the Battle of Marathon or about footwork in Netball. However, it is equally important that pupils develop more unusual skills. Thus, last week, the girls were teaching their tongues to taste!
Junior Lavant House has fostered strong links with the local Chef, Giles Thompson, of The Earl of March and The Partridge. This has resulted in taking part in the 'Chefs Adopt a School' scheme. This has been a huge success and has now been running in the Junior School for several years.
The children are eager to participate every year and the details are always kept a secret from the previous year, adding to the suspense and mystery! The aim of the session is to introduce children to 'real' food, to develop their understanding of food and food provenance and allow them the opportunity to challenge their senses. All this is carried out in the hands of a capable, culinary artist.
Pupils return to lessons, sporting an apron and chef's hat. They regale the rest of their peers with excited recounts of what they have learnt, how wonderful things taste and how proud they are of themselves for trying things they would not have previously.
