Gardening in the Junior School, January 2011
The girls in Year 5 at Junior Lavant House are making the most of the slightly longer days and the increasing amount of light. Whilst winter is a quiet time for most plants, it is a busy time for gardeners and the pupils at Junior Lavant House have a small plot to attend to. Naturally, on inspection after the Christmas holidays, they realised it was going to be quite a task to tame the soil. However, the girls set to with rakes, gloves, trowels and buckets. They pulled at stinging nettles and raked up the masses of leaves. The plot is generally known for vegetable growing, but the girls have decided that they would like to add to their growing expertise and try something a little different.
As a result, on a chilly January afternoon, they sowed a good crop of wild flowers. The girls are hopeful that these new additions to the plot will not only brighten up the space but also attract a more varied range of insects and wildlife. They are not content with feeding the local pigeon but set their sights on bees and butterflies, which they have discovered are particularly fond of blue flowers. Fingers are tightly crossed that the patch outside of the classroom window will be awash with blue cornflower in the months to come! One pupil added that an important part of gardening was having a cup of tea afterwards - they are learning fast!
