Lavant Girls Allowed to Speak Out

In this year's House Debating Competition, every girl had the opportunity to have her say on the two topics voted for by the students: assisted suicide and the impact of social networking sites.

This was a "quick prep" debate.  Rather than relying as in previous years on a few highly prepared, experienced debaters, used to strutting their rhetorical stuff this year, the speakers some of them novices, had only two hours to research their subjects, then prepare and deliver their speeches.

Before they did so, each of the school's Houses worked with their team and, in a healthy spirit of rivalry, were determined to help their speakers have all the ideas they needed to make the most persuasive argument.

The debates provided a thought provoking show.  There was lively participation from the audience, who, having already had a large input, had many challenging incisive questions to ask.  The winning team, chosen by expert Judge Dr Nicholas Sturt, consisted of Holly Edwards, Georgiana Osborne and Vicki Pang.  The girls' own choice of most persuasive speakers went to Flo Sandberg and Rebecca Sandell; the most entertaining award went to Emily Oliver.

Lavant House girls' ability to speak aloud is certainly going from strength to strength.
