Lavant House School - Independent school for girls

Entry Procedures

We have an Open Morning on a Saturday in October when there is a full programme of classes and activities and all the girls and staff are present, and also an Open Afternoon in May. Girls show visitors round and this provides a very good opportunity to talk to pupils and teachers about the school.

Junior School

Children can join the junior department at any age from 5 to 10+.

Parents should make an appointment to visit, with or without their daughter, according to their own preference. They will see the Headmistress and the Head of the Junior Department, who will show them round the school and discuss any queries they may have.

Next the prospective pupil should be registered and then she should arrange to spend a day at school in normal classes with her own age group. During the day her teachers will assess her informally, and give her the opportunity to interact socially with the other girls.

Following a successful visit the pupil will receive a formal offer of a place and parents are asked to complete an acceptance form and pay a deposit.

The school will then keep in touch with parents until the pupil starts.

In the Summer Term new girls and their parents are invited for an induction afternoon to familiarise themselves with procedures and details ready for their start next term.

Registered potential boarding pupils are welcomed to have a trial night of boarding, and all registered prospective pupils can spend an extra day at school with the appropriate class if they would like to.

Senior School

The main age of entry to the senior school is 11+ (year 7), but we also take a number of girls at 12+ and 13+, and sometimes girls come to us at other ages.

Parents will usually make an appointment to visit Lavant House early in the Autumn Term of their final year at Prep or Primary school, but many come earlier. The
Headmistress will show them round the school and spend some time talking about their daughter and answering any questions they may have.

Parents should then register prospective pupils.

For entry at 11+ there is an assessment day in January. Girls sit tests in English, Mathematics, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, and spend some time in taster senior school lessons. If a potential pupil misses this date for any reason, then we can arrange for them to do the tests later.

For entry at other ages girls are invited to spend a day at Lavant House with the appropriate class, when they will attend normal lessons for most of the day, but will also be assessed in English and Mathematics.

Academic scholarships are available at 11+ and 13+. The tests for these take place at the same time as the 11+ assessment day. Occasional special scholarships are offered, for example in music and sport.

Following the offer of a place parents are asked to complete an acceptance form and pay a deposit.

The school will then keep in touch with parents and prospective pupils until they start.

The Sixth Form

Potential Sixth Form students and their parents should make an appointment to visit the school, to meet the Headmistress and the Head of Sixth Form.

A student embarking on AS and A Level courses would generally be expected to have at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above. Each application is considered individually, and entry requirements for particular subjects are variable.

Sixth Form scholarships are available, for which applicants sit a formal examination based on the GCSE requirements of the subjects offered. The examinations take place in January.

Overseas Pupils

As far as possible overseas applicants should try to visit the school, but we realise that this may not be practicable. They should, however, contact us by telephone or email to make their initial enquiries and to provide full details of the prospective pupil.

If you would like to register your daughter for a place at Lavant House, you can download a Admission Form here.
