West Sussex West Athletic Championships
Senior Mountbatten Athletics 2011
On Wednesday 11th May 20 Lavant House students went to the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth to take part in the West Sussex West Athletics Championships. The girls took part in a variety of events ranging from the 100m to the 4x100m relay, long jump and javelin.
U14 team
The day started well on the track with Grace Hooper and Charlotte Jessop getting through to the 100m final with Grace achieving 3rd in the final. Jessica Breach and Grace Hooper then qualified for the 200m and achieved 1st and 3rd giving Lavant some vital points. With these excellent results, Grace Hooper has been asked to represent West Sussex in the 100m and Jessica Breach in the 200m at the Sussex County Athletics Championships.
It was then time for the 1 x 100m relay team with the running order of Grace Hooper, Libby Swan, Jessica Breach and Megan Adams. During the heats the team made a couple of mistakes but with their amazing speed and determination they managed to pull it back and qualify second in their heat to get into the final. The team then went with Miss Cawte to practice the changeovers and even though the team were nervous, the starting pistol went and the Lavant House relay team gave everything they had and won the relay by a clear mile. The team have now been asked to represent West Sussex at the Sussex County Championships in June.
On the field events we did not achieve first but a few girls came very close and achieved points for the school. Megan Adams came third in the long jump, losing out to second place by 3cm. Grace Hooper achieved third in the javelin and Portia Wilson-Smith came 4th in the shot put.
The girls all performed brilliantly. Lavant House finished 3rd overall out of 12 schools which, is an amazing achievement considering the size of Lavant compared to the local schools.
U16 team
The U16 team also had a lot of success both on the track and on the field. Firstly, both Maddie Leaver and Pip Rainbow got through their 200m heats and got into the 200m final. They came 5th and 6th in the final and performed brilliantly. Pip Rainbow came 2nd in the 800m final and has been asked to represent West Sussex in the County Championships alongside Natalya Fagerlund who achieved 2nd in the 1500m final and is also going to represent West Sussex. The relay team consisted of Camilla Langmead, Polly Waters, Pip Rainbow and Georgie Osborn. The team came second in their heat and in a very close final they just lost out to 2nd place by a matter of seconds to achieve 3rd.
On the field the girls performed to their best with some excellent results in the high jump, shot put and long jump. Camilla was achieving some excellent jumps in the high jump and with only 3 girls left in the competition she did all she could to jump the 1.39m bar. After three very close but unsuccessful attempts Camilla was knocked out of the competition. However, due to her excellent result she has also been selected to represent West Sussex in the Sussex County Schools' Athletics Championship.
The U15 team did not achieve a placing in the overall results but considering all of the girls are in forms III and IV and they were competing against girls in form VI believe they did tremendously well.
Well done to those seven girls who are going on to represent West Sussex for athletics, go make Lavant House proud.
