Lavant House School - Independent school for girls

Extra-Curricular Activities

Extra-Curricular Activities

The academic curriculum is enhanced by many activities which go beyond the classroom. Regular theatre and cinema visits are arranged, not just to support studies in English, Drama and Media but to cultivate an interest in the Arts in general. Regular visits to European countries combine a chance to practise modern foreign language skills with studies at Art and sculpture. The richness of our local area is explored in Activities Week in the Third Form and as a part of many other subjects ranging from Science and History to Geography and Religious Education.

The sporting life of the school is highly praised by many of our girls, with lunchtime clubs and after school fixtures. Our Thursday evening Netball Club and Activities Evenings in the summer are particularly popular, and often combined with flexi-boarding.

Other lunchtime activities include a thriving choir and small orchestra, tennis lessons, debating and public speaking societies. After school, Duke of Edinburgh training is popular and photography, creative writing and ceramics courses run.

A thriving School Council, currently led by our Head Girl meets weekly and makes a valuable contribution to the running of the school.

Each girl is placed in one of four houses, with its own House Captain, when she arrives in the school. Each house - Griffins, Unicorns, Phoenix and Centaurs - is like another smaller family within the school and organises various charity events during the year. Our last one was a ‘mad blue hair and hat' day for St Wilfrid's Hospice in Chichester. There are many inter-house competitions which are all extremely popular, non more so than our inter-house drama and technology days which provide exciting challenges for the girls to attempt, with cups for winning houses at the end of term.

Each term at Lavant ends with a school service in one of our two local parish churches. These services are attended by the whole school and parents are most welcome. In addition, our Harvest Festival service is popular and an occasion when the whole school walks over the fields to church. These services are one opportunity for the choir and various music ensembles to perform outside of school and to show to everyone how hard they have been working during the term. The Chichester Festival and our Chamber concerts, together with assemblies devoted to the performing arts, provide other chances for our musicians, speakers and actors to shine.
