Learning at Senior Lavant House

The School Day
Our Senior School offers a first rate education to girls aged 11 - 18 year. Many pupils are day girls who live in the towns and villages surrounding Chichester. After school care, flexible boarding and school buses are available.
Girls can arrive from 8.00am to get their books ready before registration at 8.40am. Lessons finish at 4.00pm. There are many activities available at lunchtime and girls are encouraged to make the most of the opportunities available. At present, we have a thriving choir which takes part in the annual Chichester Music Festival, a small orchestra, chamber concert rehearsals, tennis lessons, netball, hockey and rounders clubs and training sessions, debating and public speaking societies to name but a few. A thriving School Council meets before school on a weekly basis, Duke of Edinburgh training, creative writing, photography and occasional ceramics courses are run after school.
Matches against other schools are usually after school. Girls are taken to and from away matches in the school minibus, driven by a qualified member of staff.
Since Lavant House includes a boarding house, there is always the opportunity for senior girls to arrive early and stay late. Prep is supervised by a member of teaching staff who is on hand to help where necessary with homework assignments until 6.00 pm, when the boarding house staff take over, so girls may stay for supper if they need to.
Curriculum
A broad general curriculum is taught throughout the school, based on the National Curriculum.
In the Senior school all the girls follow a traditional curriculum in the first three years, including the usual school subjects as well as Latin, Drama and Spanish.
Learning Support
The school provides specialist help for dyslexic pupils, and for some other specific learning difficulties, such as problems with mathematics. Some older pupils need extra support with study skills in preparation for their examination courses.
Many girls have benefited from the expert 1:1 assistance in overcoming their particular problems with learning, especially as they approach GCSE with its demanding coursework requirements. This extra help may be needed throughout a pupil's school life, or just for a short period to teach them how to cope with their specific difficulty.
Homework
Varying amounts of homework are set depending on the age of pupils and the stage they have reached in their education. Girls may choose to do their prep at home or at school.
Flexible Boarding
Day girls can stay at school overnight, or for a few nights, occasionally or regularly. This encourages independence and may be particularly helpful if girls are going on theatre or other visits which return late in the evening. Boarding on a Thursday evening is popular too with the many girls who participate in Netball Club and our summer activities programme. Boarding needs to be arranged in advance and parents just need to telephone the Boarding House to check availability.
Bus Routes
The school operates four minibus routes over a 20 mile radius to transport day-girls to and from Lavant. Details of each bus route can be obtained from the Bursary and on our bus timetable.
