Learning at Junior Lavant House

Curriculum
As an independent school, we have the freedom to draw on staff expertise and experience in order to develop our curriculum in a way to best fit the pupils present at any given time.
Although we base our programmes of study on the National Curriculum we are able to interpret it as we choose and add a breadth of learning whenever possible.
Girls enjoy a rich programme of educational visits to places of interest in the local area. Occasionally residential visits further afield are arranged.
A copy of the latest curriculum overview may be downloaded from here.
The outdoor environment offers a wealth of learning opportunities for us and we make full use of our beautiful surroundings whenever possible.
Homework
Girls in the pre-prep are encouraged to read each night and spellings are set in pattern groups weekly. Many children enthusiastically practise their multiplication tables.
When girls reach Year 3, homework is set in the three core subjects. This takes the form of three topic led workbooks. All homework is set on Monday to be completed for Friday. No homework is set at weekends, we believe this is a time to relax and refresh. We keep in mind that the girls work very hard during the school day, it is very important that they have time to rest and play in the evenings.
Learning Support
The school provides specialist help for dyslexic pupils, and for some other specific learning difficulties.
Many girls have benefited from the expert 1:1 assistance in overcoming their particular problems with learning. This extra help may be needed throughout a pupil's school life, or just for a short period to teach them how to cope with their specific difficulty.
Sport
The junior staff are responsible for physical education for the Foundation classes and Year 1. Mrs Kyffin is responsible for the provision of physical education from Year 2 to Year 6. Netball is the main winter game and alongside their main lesson of the week, time is also allocated for a team practice. The Autumn term indoor activity is gymnastics and the girls are taught a combination of curriculum and formal gymnastics. At the end of this term, a floor and apparatus gymnastics display is performed for parents.
Similarly in the spring term where dance is the indoor activity, different styles of dance are performed at the end of term in the Junior "Afternoon of Dance." The summer term is always busy with rounders, athletics and swimming lessons. Matches are played every Wednesday and we also have a few inter-school athletics and swimming events.
